The four subtests behind the AFQT result
The AFQT is derived from four ASVAB subtests. A useful prep plan treats each as a bundle of prerequisite skills rather than one giant score.
Arithmetic Reasoning
Arithmetic Reasoning measures the ability to solve arithmetic word problems. The practical bottleneck is often translation: identifying what is asked, tracking units, and selecting the operation before calculating.
Mathematics Knowledge
Mathematics Knowledge focuses on principles commonly taught in high school mathematics. Plan work at the prerequisite level—fractions, exponents, algebraic manipulation, and geometry relationships—rather than memorizing answer patterns.
Word Knowledge
Word Knowledge assesses understanding of word meaning. Effective review combines roots and affixes with context, then explains why a tempting distractor does not fit the sentence.
Paragraph Comprehension
Paragraph Comprehension measures the ability to obtain information from written material. Practice should separate the main claim, supporting detail, inference, and answer choices that overstate the passage.
