Build number sense, not shortcut anxiety

No-calculator practice is most useful when it reduces cognitive load: estimation, fraction relationships, signs, and clean written steps.

Four foundations

Estimate first

Know whether the result should be around 3, 30, or 300 before exact work.

Keep fractions visible

Convert only when it simplifies the operation; avoid premature decimals.

Track signs

Separate the sign decision from the arithmetic step.

Write one line per move

Intermediate steps are an error-control tool, not wasted time.

A 15-minute block

  1. Three minutes of fraction and percent recall.
  2. Five minutes on one prerequisite skill.
  3. Five minutes on two transfer problems.
  4. Two minutes explaining one error in words.
