AFQT Plan

What's a good AFQT score? Categories, and what each service requires to enlist

Short answer

There is no pass/fail AFQT — only a percentile (1–99) and a category (I–V) that compares you to a national reference group. Category IIIA and up (a percentile of 50 or higher) is the threshold officialasvab.com names for enlistment incentive eligibility. Each service then sets its own minimum AFQT for enlistment, and that number moves with recruiting needs: Army, Marine Corps and Air Force currently publish 31 (Marine Corps and Air Force: 50 with a GED), Coast Guard publishes 32, and Navy sets its own without stating it on the page we checked — confirm the live number on their own sites.

"Good" is relative to the reference group, not a grade

Your AFQT is a percentile: a score of 65 means you did as well as or better than 65% of the 1997 national reference sample of 18–23-year-olds, not that you answered 65% of questions correctly. There is no passing score. What "good" means depends on what you're trying to do — enlist at all, qualify for an incentive, or clear a specific job's line-score cutoff (a different number entirely; see AFQT vs ASVAB).

CategoryAFQTWhat it means
I93–99Top 7% of the reference group
II65–92Above the median
IIIA50–64At or above the median
IIIB31–49Below the median; 31 is the Army, Marine Corps and Air Force minimum
IVA / IVB / IVC21–30 / 16–20 / 10–15Below every published service minimum we checked (31–32)
V1–9Below every published service minimum

The one number officialasvab.com does publish

The program's own eligibility page is explicit that "the minimum AFQT score required to qualify for enlistment varies across the different branches of service" and does not give a single number — it sends applicants to each service's site. The one threshold it does state directly: AFQT category IIIA or higher, a percentile of 50 or above, may qualify an applicant for enlistment incentives. If you're asking "is my score good," 50 is the honest first bar to clear.

Enlistment minimums, by service — what we could confirm

These are set by each service and change with recruiting needs, so treat the source and date, not this page, as the record of truth.

Air Force31502026-10-18, airforce.com/asvab

The Army's page adds that applicants scoring 21–30 may qualify for its Future Soldier Preparatory Course, an academic track meant to raise a retest above 31 rather than an automatic waiver.

We would rather show you an honest gap than repeat a number from a page we didn't load ourselves. For the Navy minimum, check navy.com directly or ask a recruiter; the Air Force publishes its minimums on airforce.com.

What this site does with your number

Run the score explorer with your official AFQT to see your category plotted against these thresholds. The diagnostic and study plan don't predict enlistment eligibility — only your official ASVAB report does that — but they show you where the four AFQT subtests are weakest, and verbal (WK + PC) is worth double in the formula that produces this percentile.
