Short answer

Paragraph Comprehension is an AFQT subtest that pairs with Word Knowledge to form Verbal Expression, counted twice in the AFQT. You read short passages and answer questions about the main idea, a specific detail, an inference the author implies but does not state, the author's purpose, or the meaning of a word in context. On paper it is 15 questions in 13 minutes, so read the question first and hunt for the answer.

Why it matters

PC has few questions, so each one is worth a lot of the VE score — and VE is doubled.

Key concepts

Main idea: usually the first or last sentence; the answer that covers the whole passage, not one detail.
Detail: find the exact line; the correct answer paraphrases it, wrong answers distort it.
Inference: what must be true given the passage — never what you personally believe.
Purpose/tone: inform, persuade, describe, entertain.
Vocabulary in context: substitute each option into the sentence.

Common mistakes

Picking an answer that is true in real life but not stated or implied in the passage.
Choosing a detail as the main idea.

Worked example

Passage says: "Because the new filters remove 99% of particulates, the plant no longer needs weekly duct cleaning." Question: what can be inferred? That duct cleaning was previously required at least weekly — not that the filters are cheap or that the plant is closing.
