AFQT Plan

Free ASVAB study guide: where to actually start

Short answer

This is a study guide built around the four AFQT subtests, not a book review or a link list. Start with the free 20-question diagnostic to see which of Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension is weakest, then use the free adaptive practice test and the topic guides to close that gap before you touch a full-length test.

Start with the diagnostic, not a practice test

A free ASVAB practice test is only useful once you know what to practice. The free diagnostic is 20 original questions drawn equally — a quarter each from AR, MK, WK and PC, so math and verbal are half each, as in the AFQT formula — so it tells you which subtest is actually costing you percentile points instead of just producing one score. No signup.

Then use the free adaptive practice test

The practice test runs 10 questions per round, selected by your weakness, the subtest's weight in the AFQT, and how long since you last saw that topic, with a full rationale after every answer. You can also drill a single subtest directly — Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension — if the diagnostic already told you which one to hit.

Read the topic guide for your weak subtest

Each AFQT subtest has its own guide with the concepts the ASVAB actually tests, common mistakes, and worked examples: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension. Verbal Expression (WK + PC combined) is doubled in the AFQT formula, so if your diagnostic shows either verbal subtest below the others, that's usually the cheapest gap to close — see AFQT vs ASVAB for why the weighting works that way.

Then build a plan instead of grinding randomly

The study plan takes your diagnostic result and allocates time by blueprint weight × how far below target each subtest is, so verbal weakness gets more time than a math weakness of the same size — proportional to how much each one is actually costing your AFQT.

What this guide will not do

It will not promise a calculator that turns practice-question results into your real AFQT percentile — official subtest scores come from item-response-theory scoring that weighs which questions you answered and how hard they were, not a count of correct answers, so no online tool can do that honestly. See AFQT vs ASVAB and the score explorer for what a real AFQT report tells you and what it doesn't. And it won't tell you what AFQT you need to enlist or to get a specific job — those numbers are set by each service and by line scores outside the AFQT; see what's a good AFQT score.
